My first clue is always the same: a rising heat in my belly, an unexplainable angst, the first sign that my nervous system regulation has slipped before my mind ever catches up. I become impatient with the people around me, and before long I'm reacting most strongly to the people I love the most.
Yesterday, I lost it on a contractor who was blocking my driveway. My fifteen-year-old stood beside me, not joining in, but quietly urging me to calm down. It was humbling.
Most days, it's easy to pause. To extend grace. To respond instead of react. But I bet you know the days I'm talking about. The spilled coffee. The overdrawn account. The contractor blocking the road. One inconvenience after another until, suddenly, you snap. Just like many of us watched our own mothers do.
But here's what I keep learning: it was never about the contractor. Or the coffee. Or the bank account. Those were simply the last straw. My nervous system had run out of margin. It wasn't glitching. It was stuck in a state it was never designed to stay in.
For years I thought I simply needed more patience. More self-control. More prayer. What I didn't understand was that my biology had become part of the story.
Chronic stress doesn't just feel bad. It measurably changes how your immune system responds, how your hormones cycle, and, for women specifically, how likely you are to develop autoimmune disease. This isn't a mindset problem. It's physiology, and the research behind it is far more specific than most wellness content lets on.
The goal isn't to eliminate stress. It's to become better at returning to safety.
Stress itself isn't the enemy. In fact, a short burst of stress is adaptive. Research from immunologist Dr. Firdaus Dhabhar, done during his years at Stanford, showed that acute stress redistributes immune cells toward the skin, sharpening the body's defenses exactly when they're needed. Dhabhar now continues this work at the University of Miami.
The problem isn't stress itself. It's staying there.
When stress becomes chronic, cortisol receptors on immune cells gradually stop responding normally, a phenomenon psychologist Sheldon Cohen and colleagues termed glucocorticoid resistance in a widely cited 2012 study in PNAS. Cortisol's job is to put the brakes on inflammation. Once that brake begins to fail, inflammatory signaling can continue unchecked, a mechanism at the center of the chronic stress and autoimmune connection researchers are increasingly focused on.
This mechanism has been implicated in autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. It's also one reason autoimmune disease disproportionately affects women. A 2023 Mayo Clinic-led analysis of electronic health record data found that women account for 63 percent of autoimmune disease diagnoses, nearly twice the rate of men, though other studies using different methods and disease definitions have put the figure closer to three-quarters. The exact number moves depending on how it's measured. The pattern underneath it does not.
Here's where the story gets interesting.
Your vagus nerve doesn't simply help you feel calm. It communicates directly with your immune system through what's known as the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, first described by Dr. Kevin Tracey at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. Through this pathway, signals carried by the vagus nerve tell immune cells when it's time to reduce inflammatory cytokine production. It functions as one of the body's primary biological brakes on inflammation.
This biology has moved well beyond theory. In July 2025, SetPoint Medical received FDA approval for an implanted vagus nerve stimulator to treat moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis in patients who had not responded to biologic medications. The approval followed the 242-patient RESET-RA trial, a randomized, sham-controlled study that found meaningfully better outcomes than sham stimulation, including 75 percent of patients free of biologic or targeted synthetic medications at 12 months. You don't need an implant to benefit from supporting vagal tone, but it's remarkable that this pathway is now validated enough to become an approved medical therapy.
The encouraging news is that you don't need expensive interventions to begin regulating your nervous system.
Tapping (EFT). A randomized controlled trial by Church, Yount, and Brooks demonstrated measurable reductions in cortisol after a single EFT session. More recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses continue to support its effectiveness for stress and PTSD symptoms. It's free, takes only minutes, and has one of the strongest evidence bases of any at-home nervous system practice.
Movement. Few interventions have stronger evidence than regular exercise. A 2026 British Journal of Sports Medicine meta-analysis by Munro and colleagues found movement matched, or even outperformed, medication and psychotherapy for reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Forest bathing. Spending time among trees isn't simply relaxing. It produces measurable biological changes. A 2019 systematic review by Antonelli and colleagues screened nearly a thousand studies, included 22 in the full review, and found forest bathing significantly lowered salivary cortisol compared with time spent in urban environments.
Tremor Release Exercises (TRE). Developed by David Berceli, in the same somatic-trauma tradition Peter Levine helped pioneer, TRE views involuntary shaking not as something to suppress, but as the body's natural way of completing an interrupted stress response and releasing stored muscular tension.
One non-invasive tool designed around this same biology is Pulsetto, a wearable that delivers gentle electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve through the skin. Guided through an app with sessions for stress, sleep, and relaxation, it offers an accessible way to explore vagus nerve stimulation at home. While it isn't equivalent to an implanted medical device, it's built on the same underlying physiology: encouraging the nervous system to spend more time in a restorative state.

That's the thread connecting everything above.
Thinking your way out of stress only goes so far. Practices like tapping, movement, breathwork, and tremor release work because they engage the body directly, helping complete physiological patterns that talk therapy alone may not fully address. The same principle runs through how we think about supporting the body's own detox pathways: physiology responds to rhythm and attention, not willpower alone.
Nervines are herbs traditionally used to support the nervous system. Some have strong clinical evidence, while others rely primarily on centuries of traditional use.
Lavender (Silexan). One of the best-studied botanical anxiolytics. A 2014 randomized trial by Kasper and colleagues found it produced significant reductions in generalized anxiety, comparable to a standard prescription comparator.
Passionflower. Supported by clinical research for anxiety and mild sedation. An early trial by Akhondzadeh and colleagues found effectiveness comparable to a prescription anti-anxiety medication but with fewer next-day sedating effects, and a 2020 systematic review by Janda and colleagues in Nutrients found consistent support for its use in anxiety and sleep.
Rhodiola. An adaptogen with evidence supporting stress resilience and a good safety profile.
Chamomile. Evidence suggests modest anxiety-reducing effects.
Lemon balm, skullcap, and oat seed. Long histories of traditional use with emerging, but less robust, modern research.
Valerian. Traditionally used for relaxation and sleep support.
Kava. Effective for anxiety, but associated with documented liver toxicity. This is one to discuss with a knowledgeable practitioner rather than self-prescribe.
Your nervous system is also shaped by what you eat.
Magnesium-rich foods, including leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate, support hundreds of enzymatic reactions involved in the stress response. Omega-3 fatty acids help regulate inflammation and support brain health. Complex carbohydrates stabilize blood sugar, preventing the physiological stress response triggered by sudden glucose crashes.
It's also worth paying attention to caffeine and sugar. Both can amplify the very sensations we associate with anxiety: racing heart, jitteriness, and restlessness. Processed foods contribute to overall inflammatory burden as well, the same cumulative burden explored in Forever Chemicals and Fertility. None of these need to be eliminated entirely, but they deserve to be noticed.
Everything above is biology. But healing isn't only biological.
A steady spiritual practice, whatever form that takes for you, offers something the nervous system alone cannot: a lived experience of not carrying everything by yourself.
That might look like contemplative prayer, meditation, gratitude, time in nature, or studying within a spiritual tradition. My own anchor is Kabbalah, but the invitation is universal.
We spend so much time trying to convince ourselves to feel safe. But safety isn't only a thought. It's a biological state. It's also a spiritual one.
The goal isn't to avoid every stressor life throws your way. It's to help your body remember how to come home again. Because healing begins the moment your nervous system finally believes the danger has passed.
Nervous system regulation isn't a personality trait some women have and others don't. It's a set of physiological patterns you can meaningfully influence, one breath, one walk, one honest look at your own biology at a time.
